The sociology department at UNC Charlotte allowed me to expand my understanding of the interactions among individuals, groups, social institutions and demography in society. With a concentration in Organizations, Occupations and Work, my courses aimed to further my knowledge of various theoretical perspectives of sociology and to provoke real world application of sociological concepts.

My 21-credit experience at UNC Charlotte’s communication department consisted of courses on: feature writing, advanced news reporting, news editing, ethics in journalism and a two-semester practicum at the university’s student media organization. During my junior year, I served as the managing editor of the university newspaper, which published an issue twice per week.

Taking one entrepreneurship course per semester, I was afforded the opportunity to increase my understanding of entrepreneurship as I progressed through my college career. The five courses taught in the Belk College of Business helped me use textbook concepts and real life experience to: recognize entrepreneurial opportunities, construct business plans, launch a new business venture, manage growth and research marketing techniques.

Circulation and Reserve Assistant

As a Circulation and Reserve Assistant at J. Murrey Atkins Library, I am responsible for assisting library patrons in utilizing the resources within the ten-story academic facility. I assist with organizing library materials and maintaining collections, coordinate with faculty who request new items be added to our collection, work on billing students with overdue items and process course reserves.

Managing Editor

As managing editor, I was responsible for coordinating the editorial duties of the publication’s staff. Publishing two issues per week, I helped increase reader engagement in print and online, recruit talented reporters and help interns become acclimated with procedures of a local news organization.

Reporter and Photographer
2012-2013Yahoo News

In the spring of 2012, I reported on the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte for Yahoo News through articles, photography and video. Following the convention, I continued to freelance for Yahoo, writing news pieces, commentary and service features until late 2013. Since the closure of the Yahoo Contributor Network, my Yahoo News portfolio has been transferred to here.
